Senior Nic Beuque has been an integral member of the University of San Diego men's tennis team throughout his collegiate career. He first started out at the University of Alabama, but transferred to play under Tom Hagedorn at the beginning of his sophomore year. His all-court game makes him a difficult opponent to play and he has risen to No. 52 in the country this year in the singles poll. Playing at mainly the No. 2 position in singles and the No. 1 spot in doubles, Beuque has been counted on for senior leadership and poise out on the court. Before the Toreros took on Fresno State in their last home match, the Business major sat down with Roland Hu for a Q & A session.
1. How did you spend your summer?
I spent it playing tennis, going to restaurants, things like that.
Where did you spend your summer?
All over France. I went from places to places.
How long did you spend in your hometown of Gex, France?
During the whole summer, no longer than three weeks.
What part of France was your favorite to visit this summer?
I liked the south of France because it felt like vacation. The beaches were there and it was fun.
Did you go on any vacation with your family or friends?
My family hasn't done that in over 10 years and with friends, I go on vacation with them all the time.
Where did you go on vacation with your friends?
Well, I went on vacation with Pierrick [Ysern] last year for a month and a half in the south of France.
So when you guys met up, did you play tennis?
Yeah, that's a part of our vacation. We just played tennis.
2. So you were involved in a very tense match against No. 13 Washington a couple of weeks ago, but you came through for your team and clinched the match. Have you ever been in a situation like that before?
I've clinched matches, but I've never had an exciting match like that before. It was definitely special because the guy I was playing was ranked high and Washington was ranked high.
3. If you could have one last meal to east, what would it be?
I don't know... anything without vegetables.
So you're a meat and potatoes kind of guy?
Meat yes, but potatoes no!
So how does the food in San Diego compare to the food in France?
The food here is a lot greasier and not nearly as good.
4. What are some differences you notice between your hometown and San Diego?
My hometown has about 5,000 people. It's very small and I pretty much know everybody.
Do you prefer the small town or the big city?
I like the city better.
Going to USD, being a small private school, did it remind you of your hometown?
No because even though it is a small school, we are still in a big city, so it doesn't really remind me of home at all.
5. What are you currently reading?
What am I currently reading? Nothing. I don't read.
What about textbooks?
Well, I'm reading an ethics book for a class.
Is it business ethics?
No, just ethics.
Is it interesting?
It is because it talks about ethics of today. They discuss what's right, what's wrong... current issues. That's what makes it interesting.
6. A place I have never visited but would love to is...
Parts of Asia and parts of South America because I'm part Asian and I'd like to Vietnam, where part of my family comes from. I'd like to visit South America because of the ladies.
Have you traveled a lot throughout Europe and the United States?
Yeah, I've seen almost every Western European country because of tennis. I've also been to Japan as well for tennis. I've been to a lot of places in the U.S. because I've been here for a few years already.
What's your favorite Western European country?
France and Spain.
What did you like about Spain?
The lifestyle.
How is the lifestyle different in Spain compared to the United States?
It is very laidback. People here are more concerned about making as much money as possible. People enjoy life more over there I'd say.
When you are done with school this year, are you going to return to France or stay here?
I'm going to stay in the States, but I don't know for how long. I am not going to stay here forever. It depends on my financial situation.
What type of industry are you thinking about?
Music. I play guitar and I sing.
Do you have a band?
I did, but not anymore. When I have the time, I will look for one and hopefully good things will happen!
Are you going to recruit Robbie Blair [fellow teammate and guitar player]?
It's a possibility!
7. If you could have one superpower, it would be...
To fly because I want to see the world from above.
8. What is your favorite website to surf when you are on-line?
Hotmail. I check my email once a day.
Are there any other websites you go to when you aren't checking your email?
I like to go to music websites.
About music news or music tips...?
I go to my favorite band's website or I go to websites that gives me notes for playing songs.
Who is your favorite band?
Incubus.
Have you gone to any Incubus concerts?
Yes I have, in Paris.
Have you been to any concerts in the U.S.?
I went to Metallica in San Diego.
Are they one of your favorite bands as well?
Yeah, they are.
