Tutoring for Student Athletes

Students who would like to request tutoring must do so within the first TWO WEEKS of classes. We want the tutors to be able to follow the class with you. If you wait until half way through the semester, it is difficult for the tutor to be effective. There are some exceptions to this; a few examples would be English tutoring (writing papers) and Math tutoring. We will have drop in tutors available for these subjects or you may also use the tutoring resources available on campus.

Your tutors are hired to assist you to gain a clearer understanding of course material and help you prioritize the vast amount of information, in terms of importance, that is presented to you in class.

In order to be hired with the department, tutors must be upper division or graduate students who have excelled academically. They are required to have a 3.0 GPA or higher and have received a grade of B or better in the course in which they are tutoring. Ideally, they have had the instructor who teaches the class that they are tutoring.

TUTORING REQUIREMENTS- MAKE THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SESSIONS!

In order to be effective, tutoring must be regular. Therefore, it is the policy of this program that you meet with the tutor for at least one hour EVERY WEEK. Even if you do not have any new material in the class or there are no assignments due, you need to be reviewing upcoming material from the lectures and reading with your tutor. The tutor needs to get to know you, your strengths, and your weaknesses. This can only be done effectively if they meet with you on a consistent basis.

In order for tutoring sessions to be effective, you need to:

  • Come prepared. Have you notes and textbooks with you.
  • Attend class. The tutor is not a substitute for class attendance.
  • Come with some work completed. You need to read the material before you arrive. The tutoring sessions are NOT to be used to catch up on your reading.
  • Come with questions.

Tutoring sessions are 55 minutes long. Any additional time must be approved prior to the sessions. Tutors are trained and expected to utilize the entire session.

All tutoring sessions will be held in the Academic Support Center in the large meeting room across the hall from the Assistant Director of Athletics for Academics' office. Other rooms are available if space becomes a problem. Tutors will sign in on the board in the Academic Support Office. Check to see that your tutor is here when you check in. No tutoring should take place outside of the center without prior approval from Shaney Fink.

    WANT TO BECOME A TUTOR?

Athletic Academic Support employs approximately 25 tutors for weekly one on one and group tutoring sessions. Tutors are required to participate in a tutor orientation and are both undergraduate and graduates who have previous expertise for the class they are tutoring.
